How to Create a Triggered Add-on Campaign
Overview
This guide explains how to create a Triggered Add-on campaign in the Promotion App.
A Triggered Add-on campaign lets you recommend an additional product when a customer adds a specific product to their cart. For example, when a customer adds a T-shirt to cart, you can suggest a matching mug with 20% off
Before you begin
Before creating a Triggered Add-on campaign, make sure that:
| Requirement | Description |
|---|---|
| Promotion App is enabled | The Promotion App must be turned on in your BGS admin |
| Trigger product is ready | This is the product that activates the add-on offer |
| Add-on product is ready | This is the product customers will be encouraged to add |
| Product pricing is reviewed | Check your margin before applying a discount |
Example campaign:
| Setting | Example |
|---|---|
| Trigger product | T-shirt |
| Add-on product | Matching Mug |
| Offer | 20% off the mug |
| Display location | Cart / Cart Drawer |
| Goal | Increase Average Order Value before checkout |
Step-by-Step Guideline
Step 1: Enable the Promotion App
- From your BGS admin, go to Apps.
- Find Promotion.
- Make sure the app is turned on.
If the Promotion App is not enabled, Triggered Add-on campaigns will not appear on your storefront

Step 2: Open the Promotion App
- Go to Promotion from your BGS admin.
- You will see the promotion list page.
- Click + Create promotion.
A dropdown menu will appear with different promotion types

Step 3: Select Triggered Add-on
From the Create promotion dropdown, select:
Triggered add-on
This will open the Triggered Add-on campaign setup page

Step 4: Enter the Offer Title
In the Offer Title field, enter a clear name for your campaign.
The title is mainly used for internal management, so it should help you quickly understand what the campaign does.
Step 5: Set the Buy rule
The Buy rule defines which product or collection will trigger the add-on offer.
In the Discount rule section, configure:
Step 5: Set the Buy rule
The Buy rule defines which product or collection will trigger the add-on offer
In the Discount rule section, configure:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Buy quantity | The number of qualifying items the customer must add |
| Product / Collection selector | Choose whether the trigger is based on a product or collection |
| Selected product / collection | The product or collection that activates the offer |
Example
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Buy | 1 |
| Item type | Product |
| Selected product | T-shirt |
With this setup, the offer will be triggered when the customer adds the selected T-shirt to cart
Step 6: Select the trigger product or collection
Click Select product in the Buy section.
You can choose either:
| Option | Use when |
|---|---|
| Product | You want the offer to trigger from one specific product |
| Collection | You want the offer to trigger from multiple products in the same collection |
Step 7: Set a minimum purchase amount, optional
You can enable Require minimum purchase amount if customers must spend a minimum amount on the trigger product before the add-on offer becomes available.
Use this option when you want to protect your margin
Example:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum purchase amount | $24.99 |
| Trigger product | T-shirt |
| Add-on offer | Mug 20% off |
In this case, the customer must add a qualifying T-shirt that meets the minimum purchase amount before the mug offer appears.
This is useful when:
- The add-on product has a lower profit margin
- The discount is high
- You do not want low-priced items to unlock valuable offers
- You want the offer to apply only to premium products or full-price items
Step 8: Set the Get rule
The Get rule defines what the customer receives after the trigger condition is met
Configure the following fields:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Discount value | The discount amount customers receive |
| Discount type | Percentage discount or fixed amount discount |
| Maximum discounted quantity | The maximum number of add-on items that can receive the discount |
| Product / Collection selector | Choose whether the add-on is a specific product or a collection |
| Selected product / collection | The product or collection customers can add with the discount |
With this setup, the customer can add up to 1 matching mug with 20% off.
Step 9: Select the add-on product or collection
Click Select product in the Get section.
Choose the product or collection you want to recommend in cart.
Recommended POD pairings:
| Trigger product | Suggested add-on |
|---|---|
| T-shirt | Matching mug |
| Hoodie | Cap or beanie |
| Family shirt | Kids tee or baby bodysuit |
| Canvas print | Matching poster |
| Pet lover shirt | Pet mug or tote bag |
| Christmas shirt | Ornament |
Choose add-on products that feel naturally related to the item already in the customer’s cart.
Step 10: Configure how the discount applies
In the How this discount applies section, you can choose whether the discount should apply only once.
Apply this discount only once
Enable this option if you want the discount to be applied only one time per order
| Setting | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Disabled | The discount may apply again when the cart qualifies multiple times |
| Enabled | The discount applies only once, even if the cart qualifies multiple times |
When to enable it
Enable Apply this discount only once when:
- The discount is high
- The add-on product has a high base cost
- You want to protect your profit margin
- The offer is designed as a one-time gift-style upsell
When to leave it disabled
Leave it disabled when:
- You want customers to buy multiple add-ons
- Your product margin can support repeated discounts
- You are selling family or group products
- The campaign is designed to encourage larger orders
Step 11: Set Discount Priority
The Discount priority setting controls which add-on item receives the discount when multiple items may qualify.
You can choose one of the following options:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| First added item | Applies the discount to the first qualifying add-on added to cart |
| Cheapest item first | Applies the discount to the lowest-priced qualifying add-on |
First added item
This is the default option. It is simple and easy for customers to understand.
Use this when:
- Your campaign has only one add-on product
- Add-on products have similar prices
- You want the customer experience to stay straightforward
Cheapest item first
This option helps protect your margin when multiple add-on products are available.
Use this when:
- Your add-on collection includes products with different prices
- You want the discount to apply to the lowest-priced qualifying item
- You are offering add-ons such as mugs, tote bags, hoodies, and blankets in the same campaign
Step 12: Set Display Priority, optional
The Display Priority setting helps decide whether Triggered Add-on should be prioritized over standard in-cart product recommendations when there is a product conflict.
Enable Prioritizing Triggered Add-on if this campaign should take priority over regular in-cart suggestions.
Use this option when:
- The Triggered Add-on offer is more relevant than general recommendations
- You created a specific product pairing
- The trigger product is a best-seller
- The product is part of an active advertising campaign
- You want customers to see the discounted add-on instead of a regular suggestion
